This door cover was designed specifically for the UCLA School of Design Media Arts as a functional and visually engaging guide for graduate students collecting gallery equipment. Serving both as a directional aid and an aesthetic element, the cover enhances the often plain hallway where it is located, drawing attention and adding vibrancy to the space.
The design prominently features 3D-modeled representations of available equipment, including projectors, computer monitors, tripods, VR headsets, mice, keyboards, microphones, cables, adapters, cameras, and speakers. Each item is meticulously modeled to provide students with an immediate and clear visual reference, ensuring they can efficiently locate and retrieve necessary equipment.
This cover especially benefits new students or first-time visitors, who may be unfamiliar with the space and available resources. By providing a clear visual guide, it reduces confusion and facilitates a quicker, smoother equipment pick-up experience, empowering users to engage with the available tools more confidently.
In response to the client’s request for a vibrant, eye-catching design, I initially presented three colorful mock-ups, from which the client selected a bold pink background. This choice adds warmth and visibility, making the cover a noticeable and welcoming feature in the space.
Printed at 35.5 inches by 105.25 inches with a high resolution of 250 DPI, the door cover captures intricate details, ensuring clarity and a professional finish. The rendering process, which took over 24 hours, allowed for high fidelity and precision in the final asset, merging functional purpose with artistic expression.
Challenges Overcome: The extensive rendering time was a key challenge due to the high level of detail needed at such a large scale. If I were to approach the project again, I would focus on designing around the typography more thoughtfully, aiming for a cleaner and more refined layout that would enhance readability. Improving typographic clarity in such an intricate design would not only optimize visual impact but also further aid functionality by making information immediately accessible at a glance.
